Volunteering with Hospice

Volunteers are an essential part of our success in delivering hospice/palliative care programs and services to our community.

Alberni Hospice has a strong reputation for providing excellent volunteers.

They are carefully screened and trained to enhance their skills and abilities. Our volunteers are special people who, directly or indirectly, are able to make a difference in the lives of individuals and their families who are experiencing illness, grief and bereavement.

We rely on our dedicated volunteers sharing their time and skills in the following areas:

Client Support Roles
(advanced screening and training required)
  • Ty Watson House Volunteers
Provide emotional, social, and spiritual support for residents and families; provide meals for residents
  • Community Volunteers
Provide companionship, practical support, caregiver respite and vigil sitting (at the bedside when death is near)
  • Bereavement Volunteers
Effectively listen to recently bereaved clients through telephone and in-person contacts as well as support groups
  • Complementary Therapy
Skilled, certified practitioners provide Healing Touch, Reiki, or Reflexology to clients and families
  • Reflections (Life Story Recording)
Additionally trained volunteers interview clients and record special memories to provide a loving legacy for family or friends
  • Advanced Care Planning (ACP)
Assist with workshops to inform community members about how to prepare to make health care decisions when unable to speak for one self

Society Support Roles
  • Board of Directors
Be part of a 9 member Board responsible for maintaining the society’s vision, working towards hospice goals and maintaining fiscal responsibility for the organization
  • Library Support
Maintenance and upkeep of community end of life resource library
  • Special Events and Fundraising
Enthusiastic volunteer teams assist in a variety of ways with our annual awareness-raising and fundraising events such as Black Ty Gala, Butterfly Release, Raffles and Celebrate a Life

Our other fundraising efforts are coordinated by the general Fundraising Committee, who meet monthly to discuss and plan our other fundraising efforts.
If you're interested in helping with our butterfly release, raffles, or other fundraising efforts, please join us! :)
