Or do you know of a senior person who is receiving care in the Alberni Valley community who is far away from many of their loved ones? Do you wish that you could get them connected but you just don’t know how? Again, we have a plan for you and your senior friend or family member.
The Alberni Valley Hospice Society is about to launch a new program called, “Caring Connections”. Through this program, any senior person living in the Alberni Valley who is receiving care from the community, be it as complex as palliative care or a simple as a daily phone call from the Sunshine Club, is eligible for our program.
Through a grant from New Horizons for Seniors Community-Based Projects, we have purchased six iPads. We are in the process of assembling a committee of dedicated volunteers of various ages who are willing to undergo special training in the use of the iPad and who are willing to spend a little time to assist a senior person in care to connect with family and friends. Through Skype, emails, Facetime and other social media, we hope to connect grandparents to their grandchildren, siblings to siblings and friends to friends.
Sometimes we cannot heal the physical challenges of the aging process but we all know that each person is so much more than their physical body. Spiritual, social and psychological health is as significant as physical health and those dimensions of our being can be intact and healthy until the end of our days. Connecting seniors to their extended family and friends has great power to massage the soul. Imagine the joy for a grandmother who can speak to her grandchildren face-to-face in real time through Skype! There is no medicine that can match that!
With generous support from the Regional District which has leant us the expertise of George Rose, their I-Tech chief, we will soon have the iPads platformed so that they can be used in any setting whether there is internet access or not. This gives us the capacity to go wherever the senior is who wishes to make a caring connection.
If you have expertise and would like to join our committee please contact us. If you know of a senior who could really benefit from this program, please contact us. We can be reached through Ty Watson House at 250-723-4478 or through firstname.lastname@example.org
