Ty Watson HouseThe Ty Watson House Bed program opened January 22, 2008 and is now available to the community for extended and respite stays. The Ty Watson House, a beautiful heritage home, was a gift to the people of the Alberni Valley from the estate of Mr. A. C. (Ty) Watson. The vision to turn this lovely home into a hospice facility has been ten years in the making. The Alberni Valley Hospice Society has an agreement with the Vancouver Island Health Authority to open Ty Watson House using a community model of care. As a 5 bed community hospice, 24 hour care is provided for people facing a life limiting illness but not requiring a hospital admission. Medical and nursing care will be provided by the residents's personal physician and the RN's and Community Health Workers (Home Support) from Home and Community Care (HCC). HCC staff visit the residents just as if the client was in his/her own home. A community health worker is on site 24 hours a day and there is 24 hour access to an RN on call. The Alberni Valley Hospice Society provides the hospitality services (meals, etc.) and offers the full range of hospice services available to the rest of the community. While nursing care is paid for through the Vancouver Island Health Authority, hospitality services are not. There is a low cost per diem rate for both extended and respite stays. Our vision is to maintain a comfortable loving environment in which to cherish, refresh, and honor clients, their friends and families. Hospice care is tailored to the needs of each individual resident and family to provide as much support as they require. The Boards of the Ty Watson Home Foundation and the Alberni Valley Hospice Society extend their sincere appreciation to the Vancouver Island Health Authority, individuals, service groups and businesses who have helped and are continuing to help make this dream a reality for the people of this community.
