QUILTERS GIFT BUTTERFLY QUILT TO TY WATSON HOUSE

Mark your calendars and plan on participating in the 9th ANNUAL HIKE FOR HOSPICE event scheduled for May 1st. To kick off the activities being organized for the month of May, Ty Watson House will raffle a beautiful handcrafted quilt donated from a group of local quilters known as "The Saturday Quilters".

The origin of "The Saturday Quilters" goes back to 2005 when a group of friends decided to get together and learn quilting techniques from each other. Under her watchful eye, Erica Schubart, patiently walked and talked them through many projects. Over the years, the group’s membership has expanded from three to about a dozen quilters. Through the process of working together, they came to realize the value of old fashioned work bees in the community and decided such endeavours were worth repeating.

A butterfly theme was selected because of its significance to palliative care. Author Elizabeth Kubler-Ross inspired the quilters with the following quotation: "Death is simply a shedding of the physical body, like the butterfly shedding its cocoon." With this in mind, the butterfly became the perfect symbol for their beautiful quilt.

The butterfly quilt involved each member making one or two squares which were then sewn together into a queen-size quilt. The quilt unquestionably demonstrates the group’s work of the heart. The combined talents and efforts of The Saturday Quilters created the quilt and Lynn Schroeder, along with the staff of Kismet Quilts, brought the quilt to life with their creative stitching.

Raffle tickets on this striking quilt (valued at $800) are now on sale from Hospice volunteers and at the Hospice office (2649 2nd Avenue). The draw is scheduled to take place at Hospice’s BLACK TY GALA event at the Echo Centre on May 28th.
